Tips For First Time Skiers

Call the Trakkline 416-763-0173 for up-to-date information.

How fit should I be?

If you are used to walking a couple of miles briskly several times a week, that is a good measure of how much energy is required to ski. The ski trails vary in length and difficulty and you can increase your time gradually. It is better to go out for short runs (4 - 5 km) a couple of times a day rather than attempt a long trail before you know your endurance level.

What clothing do I need?

Forget all those fancy ski outfits - some basic points to keep in mind: dress in layers - long underwear made from polypropylene or similar material is a must. It wicks the moisture away from the body. Definitely not cotton. Ski pants over the underwear is all you need on the bottom. On top, a sweater followed by a light jacket is usually sufficient. In extremely cold or mild conditions, you can either add a heavier sweater or remove it entirely. Remember, cross country skiing requires physical exertion and your body produces its own heat. Good gloves/mitts are a must. A hat is optional but most people want a headband to cover the ears. One pair of wool or polypropylene socks is usually sufficient. Carrying an extra set of clothing is recommended if you perspire heavily and wish to change during lunch or at the end of the day.

Should I carry food or water?

A fanny pack is essential with some liquids and energy bars. On long or difficult trails, a person will perspire and the fluid needs to be replaced. You can also store an extra sweater in the pack.

What equipment do I need?

Renting is a good option for new skiers. Cost is from $15.00 - $25.00/day. Most of the resorts we frequent have a good selection of skis and boots. Renting allows you to take your time to select your skis. And remember Trakkers gives ski lessons as part of your membership. Your ski instructor can give you some good tips - depending on your ability.

Bargains are available at the end of the season when resorts may be selling off their rental equipment. Stores may also have rental or used equipment to sell.

Rentals

  • Hardwood Hills
  • Highlands Nordic
  • Horseshoe Valley
  • Mansfield
  • Scenic Caves
  • Wassaga Nordic

These are all resorts we go to regularly.

If we do plan a trip to a more remote spot, we will be sure to advise you if there are no rentals. Most trips are from 1 hour to 1-and-1/2 hour travel time from Toronto.

What does a typical day cost?

Trail fees vary from $14.00 - $20.00 for a full day skiing. Food is available at most resorts but many people bring their own and supplement it with a few extras at the snack bar. Trakkers membership includes one Sunday bus trip fare. After that the bus fare can be as little as $21.00 per trip (with the purchase of Trakkers Vouchers). Cash fare is $25 per trip.

Remember - skiing gives you a good physical workout - there are lots of people to meet - and you can enjoy a few of the other social evenings we offer. There is always someone to help get you started.
